In Vietnam and many developing countries in the world, up to 80% of waste is disposed using sanitary landfill because of some of its utilities.
Landfill today is an the most economical, safe and easily-designed method among all solid waste disposal methods. Moreover, with qualified sanitation facilities, waste landfill will do no harm to water, soil, air and residential life for a very long time.
However, in fact, sanitary landfill does not eventually solve the environment puzzle but only be favorable because of its economic benefit. The biggest issue lies in the lower layer of landfills, which is not supported with sufficient technology, leading to liquid waste leaking, creating unpleasant smell. Even more seriously, methane, dust, gases, and bacteria from landfills may create negative impacts to the ecosystem and residents’ health.
Today, Vietnam is testing more modern and sufficient methods to keep up with the world’s general trend – the desire of every environmentalist and residents.
